Gil Brewer, who had not previously published any novels, began to write for Gold Medal Paperbacks in 1950-51. Brewer wrote some 30 novels between 1951 and the late 60s – very often involving an ordinary man who becomes involved with, and is often corrupted and destroyed by, an evil or designing woman. His style is simple and direct, with sharp dialogue, often achieving considerable intensity. Brewer was one of the many writers who ghost wrote under the Ellery Queen byline as well. Brewer also was known as Eric Fitzgerald, Bailey Morgan, and Elaine Evans.

A Taste for Sin:
An entertaining, dark-humored work that plota pretzels, perversity, multifaceted lusts, and murder in this Brewer-distinctive, short-&-sharp novel about an illicit couple (Phalen and Felice) whose plans - when compared to those of other Brewer protagonists - are feasible, at least initially.
Flight to Darkness:
Eric Garth is a Korean War veteran who has spent the last several months of his life in a psychiatric ward. There, he becomes romantically involved with a nurse named Leda, who seems to have more than just a passing interest in the inheritance that Eric is due to receive once his ill mother passes. When Eric is fingered for a brutal murder, an incident that he doesn't remember happening, he begins doubting his own sanity. Is he a delusional killer, or has he been set-up?
The Angry Dream (The Girl from Hateville):
She was even lovelier than I remembered. I watched her as she walked into the room, admiring the smooth movement of her fine legs and the curves under the soft weave of her sweater. She tossed her thick dark hair back and walked over to me. It's been a long time, Al. Her voice still had the husky, breathless sound that made my ears burn. I stepped close to her and put my hands on her waist. Her head went back, her eyes shining at me with bitterness and confusion and something else I couldn t read. I drew her to me and felt the soft impact of her body and kissed her her throat and then her lips. Her mouth opened and her body abandoned itself to mine, her fingernails digging at my back.
The Brat:
An attractive dame (Evis Helling) with a lot of sass and a little bit of mystery behind her wanton ways lands her man hook line and sinker after easily seducing him in a swapland hear her home. Lee Sulliven is a sucker for curves, and falls too quickly for Evis. They return to Lee's hometown where Lee panders to Evis' every demand. Eventually the financial and relationship stability make way for greed as Evis' real intentions come to light.
The Vengeful Virgin:
The depraved portrayal of the young, red-haired femme fatale in Gil Brewer's 1958 pulp classic, The Vengeful Virgin, a seductress "straight out of hell" is a fitting description for the novel's sexually supercharged and sordid story line. When Florida television repairman Jack Ruxton is called to the home of Victor Spondell, a wealthy invalid suffering from a degenerative respiratory illness, and his shapely 18-year-old stepdaughter, Shirley Angela, he soon becomes a willing conspirator in a scheme to kill the ailing man and run off with both Shirley Angela and a suitcase full of cold, hard cash. But Ruxton, who has a history of using women, gets in way over his head when the murder plot goes terribly wrong.
Wild:
I never knew what trouble was until she came back into my life and started fanning the flames on an old torch. I need you, Lee, she said. Then she looked up at me with those wonderful, burning dark eyes of hers, and I fell into them, just like I always did, like it was yesterday, and we were crazy in love on Cloud 13. Only it was today. Only she already had a husband. Only he was missing. She wanted me to find him before he found her and killed her. There were holes in her story. There were holes in my head, too. Because I bought every word of it. Bang! The next thing I knew I was head over heels in a mess of corpses, killers, and wild, wild women.
Wild to Possess:
The protagonist, Lew Brookbank, has been bouncing around Florida for six months, running away from the craziness of his life — his wife, Janice, who had been having an affair with a boat bum they knew, Deke Clarkson, and when he went to the guy’s boat to catch and confront them, he found both their dead bodies, shot up. Freaked out, he took the boat out, dumped their bodies in the ocean, and let the boat drift off. He had a Luger and figured the cops might try to pin the murders on him. He then started to wander, planted himself in Gulfville, a small Florida town, got a girlfriend, Rita, and tried to forget…only, he drinks more and more...
